Ray Stingray

“Sometimes a man can meet his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.”
-The International, starring Clive Owen
2009 motion-picture thriller

Twenty-five years ago today:

June 4, 1986
Wednesday

My legs are still sore. I feel like I dressed for cold weather (black and brown colors) and it looks like it is going to get hot (yuck!).

Greg Manachevitz ‘sort of’ apologized to me for not being his regular self while in Palm Springs. He’s very irregular at all times, so what is the difference?

I telephoned Ron Leoni at about 10AM today. He was still in bed.
“Hey, I’m glad to hear from you!” Ron said as I heard him blow smoke from a cigarette.
It was great to talk to him.

At lunch I went and bought John (my brother) and Ron gifts for their birthdays. I bought them each a shirt, t-shirt, socks and “undies”. I hope they both like my selections.

I telephoned Amy Platt. She seemed happy to hear from me.
“I haven’t spoken to Karen since your party,” Amy announced.
“Why?” I asked.
“You know, Michael, that night of your party we had it out…and it was a big argument at that!”
She had me intrigued as to what had happened, so I took it upon myself to call Karen. I left a message on her answering machine: “Hi Karen, it is Michael. Please call me so we can get together and just ‘plain’ talk.”

By the way, Amy has heard of (and eaten) at New York’s famous “Mama Leoni’s Pizza”.

I called Ron Leoni a couple of more times on this afternoon. He’s a good guy.

My left thigh was so sore all last night and today. It was murder. I could cry but I survived the day.

Once I was at home I wrapped Ron’s birthday gift for mailing. I took a hot bath, hoping that would relieve some of my soreness.

Mike Miller called me. He and Greg came over to my pad and I was happy about it. I needed some company. Mike returned the videotape movie he had borrowed yesterday. I watched the movie VISION QUEST with them. While watching the movie I received a surprise phone call from Tammy Duhr.
Tammy sounded distressed and said, “Michael, I was in Yosemite during your Birthday Party. I’m so sorry I couldn’t make it.”
It was nice to hear from her again. We may meet up again soon.
I asked, “How about this weekend?”
“I’m off camping with Dad,” she shrugged.
I knew she would rather be spending time with me.

Johnny Schaefer returned the phone call I had made to him today.
“At the end of June or early July I may have some time off to come up there again.”
“That would be great,” I said, realizing nervously that Ron Leoni had mentioned that he may be able to come around that time, too.
Either way—I hope Ron does come up here to Northern California sometime soon. He has never been up here. I think I could give him a good all-around tour.

Ray Stingray (Mark Landreth’s alias) called me at around 9:15PM.
“Phil and Sue were at the gym. She asked for you.”
I was sure that Mark had told them that I was at the gym yesterday.
“I figured you were slacking off since you didn’t show up at the gym tonight,” Mark announced.
“I was just so sore on my left thigh that I figured I’d take a break. I might just take it easy for a day. I don’t want to overdo it.”
Mark agreed.
Mark also said, “You especially shouldn’t overdo it since you were just on vacation.”
I laughed.

Mike and Greg left and I went to bed.  I couldn’t help myself and started to telephone Mark again when Tammy called back to verify her telephone number. Tammy and I talked a bit more about Frank Vasconcellos and his ‘low riding’ ways. She went on about how Rick Clark ripped-off Sean when they were roommates for about three months. She has so many stories.

I am going to enter two events:
1.)  The Le Tour de San Francisco (and possibly win a trip to France) and
2.) a San Jose Bike and Hike Race that is scheduled for July 12th and 13th.
It will be fun.  I can’t wait!

It’s time for bed now. My legs are still sore. They’re not as bad as yesterday though.
Yawn.
