Whatever

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown
Nobody could fight his way through here even with a message from a dead man.
But you sit at your window when evening falls and dream it to yourself.

-Franz Kafka
"An Imperial Message", a parable

Twenty-five years ago today

January 7, 1986
Tuesday

I worked from 7AM until 7PM. The bad news of the day was that Larry, my 2nd Line boss, gathered each section together in his office to inform us that only one person could submit a Job Transfer out of our office per month ‘as time permits’. This will be enforced until requisitions get filled.
Larry announced, “We are currently short twelve people in our office.”

The entire meeting threw me for a loop. I am now encouraged to look into other positions outside of the company. There must be a position for me at IBM, Digital Equipment, and RAND Info Systems for some sort of sales related positions.

I gave Steph my Job Transfer Request forms for Advertising Sales Rep. in San Jose, Los Angeles and San Francisco anyway. Who knows now when they’ll be processed to move along?

I enjoyed another Chinese lunch with Margaret at B&M. She’s been taking her lunch at noon just so we can go eat out together. We ran into Karyn Kossoff at lunchtime but not many words were exchanged.

There are sales incentive contests going on at the office. Margaret and I both want the United Artists Theater tickets.

I went home and received a call from Dale Orlando.
“Guess what?”
“What?”
“Our limo adventure was cancelled because word leaked to columnist Herb Caen. And if Caen badly publicized about it and related the July rate increase it would look really bad. So, it’s all cancelled and will be replaced with who knows what.”
“Whatever.”

I did my thirty minutes of aerobics and washed clothes. It was domestic chores day. I wrote a brief cover letter and resume. Once I finished it the phone rang. It was Chad.
“I’ve been thinking of you,” Chad said happily.
“Oh yeah?” I asked.
“Yeah,” Chad continued, “I think it would be great if one supported another through school.”
I had supported myself through two years of school, so I don’t know what he was hinting about. He’d best think again. He needs to stand on his own two feet. I cannot and will not support him totally—if that’s what he was joshing about.

We had a nice “miss you” session over the phone. I’m glad he reminded me that January 8th will be our two-month Anniversary. He made me smile.

I received a phone call from Steph Redding. And so what else is new? Guess who is working at CENTURY 21 now and wants me to attend one of their business meetings sometime.
“Steph, I’d love to sell real estate for a change of careers for more money…but there’s risk.”

It is now time for bed. Tomorrow is another 7AM start-off kind of day. This will total six hours of overtime for the week (for me) once the clock hits 8:30AM tomorrow.

"Yes, we're both in the right, and to keep us from being irrevocably aware of it, hadn't we better just go our separate ways home?"
-Franz Kafka
