"The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest"
Twenty five years ago today:
October 2, 1985
Wednesday
It’s funny as I dawn on the events of yesterday evening. I noticed Leonard had a thick stash of dollar billfolds in his wallet. He likely wanted me to notice it.
My eyes opened and said, “Oh, was it payday?”
“Every day is pay day.”
“Sheesh,” I thought.
Then I said, “Well, my payday is Thursday.”
I found a cool number for Leonard’s Residence: 537-0555. The number will go into effect on October 25, 1985. He’s supposed to return from Europe on October 22nd, so it will be perfect timing. I will miss him.
Work was much easier today. I felt better, too. Margaret Lai and I ate lunch at Natoma’s.
After work I went straight to the gym. There were a lot of familiar faces but no one to really speak of or mention today. I did do a twelve minute period on the Life Cycle and one set of weight training followed by another twelve minutes on the Life Cycle. Then I gouged into fast food at Burger King. I ate at mom’s house. I felt “ugh” afterwards.
I watched DYNASTY with mom. Then I got startled when mom’s doorbell rang. I laughed afterwards because it was some guy who wanted to talk about GREENPEACE. Mom had just dyed her hair and she was in her loungewear, so I had to answer the door.
Mom asked, “Who was it?”
“Oh, some guy about Greenpeace.”
“Green peas?” She asked.
That’s why I laughed afterwards.
“NO, not Green peas, Greenpeace.”
Mom made the funniest looking grin of weirdness because she hadn’t a clue about what I was talking about. She made me laugh so hard and my laughter caused a contagion for her to laugh, too.
Mom declared, “You know, Ashley has been saying your name a lot lately.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, and she was looking at the TV Guide and saw a picture of this sketch of Perry King…that actor, and she said ‘Mike’.”
I laughed aloud.
“That is so cute,” I said with a super smile.
I went home after DYNASTY concluded. I chose to give Denise Vinsonhaler a call.
“You know, I just about had given up on you.”
I laughed.
“Well, I am going to a section dinner on Friday night, so I can’t go out until later. What are you doing?”
“I may go dancing at the SHERATON in Concord, so why don’t you come if you want?”
I guess that was a ‘sort of’ invitation, so I ‘sort of’ invited her to “50’s” this coming Saturday night. The office is supposed to have a farewell party at "50's" for Elizabeth Center. After our chatter I went to bed.
He had immense trust in his ability to precisely remember words and phrases uttered beside him that might lurk profitably over the month hiatus.
